Do you know what to look for when buying a new car? Many people have never bought a car and are looking for tips on what to buy, and how to buy it. Buying a car doesn’t have to be difficult, but it does require some knowledge of how the industry works, at least if you want to successfully get a good deal.
About 15 million new cars were sold last year. If you’re considering becoming one of the millions of new car buyers this year, what should you know going in? Here are three quick tips.
1. Figure Out What You Can Spend Each Month
Budgeting — a part of everyone’s lives — is especially essential when you are trying to purchase a new car. It’s easy to get confused at a dealership, especially if you’re not remembering to figure out how placing money down on signing counts. You need to be able to pay not only for your car, but also its insurance, auto repairs and maintenance, and gas besides. If you’re not sure about your future financing, aim for a more affordable car to give yourself wiggle room.
2. Check Online for Manufacturer Incentives
If you already know to some extent what type of car you’re interested in buying, you can check online to view the current manufacturer incentives. These will often vary month to month, so if you find the right one, get ready to put down your money. Edmunds.com is one website that has information about manufacturer rebates and leasing deals. Right now, the Ford Fusion 2012 midsize sedan, for example, has a rebate offered of up to $2,500 off the total cost.
3. If You Have an Old Car, Sell it at a Different Time
Many people decide to bring in their old car for a trade in. This can seem like a good way to get rid of your grandma’s hand-me-down clunker. In reality, though, you’re usually better off bringing it to a used car dealership at another time. When you’re in someone’s office talking about new car sales, you’re psychologically going to feel the “burden” of the old car and look for quick ways to get rid of it, and are more likely to take a deal that doesn’t provide you as much value.
